Life's a Wreck

Life's a Wreck

Mental health isn't just mental illness, it's in everything we do. There are ups and downs, it's beautiful and messy, and at the end of the day, life's a wreck. Thing is, that wreck is what makes us 'US' and isn't that worth celebrating? A layered and rich wreck of emotions, nuance and stories, all culminating in very human experiences. We believe that conversations surrounding mental health deserve to leave the tall shadow of stigma and have their moment in the limelight. Life's a Wreck aims to be a museum of mental health, a parlour to the people, a place to celebrate all things mental, curating the stories of others and examining a world hidden behind stigma with a joyous curiosity and passion for storytelling. Join Kyle Moore around our proverbial campfire to share stories about the world we live in looked at through the lens of mental health. This is Life's a Wreck.

I imagine this episode to be best enjoyed while on a long walk, drive or curled up with a warm beverage. Today's conversation is one of authenticity, vulnerability, pain and beauty. Michael DeVenney is a friend of the show and an amazing advocate for the space where mental health and entrepreneurship intersect. I was blessed to be invited to Michael's beautiful home to share this conversation. I was introduced to Michael's work when we collaborated on a presentation for youth entrepreneurs, and after hearing his story, I knew I needed to get him on the pod. Michael's willingness to speak openly about a traumatic childhood that consisted of sexual violence, emotional suppression and bullying and how it's led to a lifelong journey of self-realization and healing is nothing short of inspirational. One of my favourite conversations to date. Kick back and relax because life is indeed a big ol wreck.

What's up you beautiful people and welcome back to another episode of Life's a Wreck. This week on the pod I'm stoked to be joined by TEDx Speaker, Mental Health Keynote and Public Speaker, Singer, Songwriter and Goodwill Ambassador to Holt International and HCMC Peace and Development Foundation; Amy Minh Hanh Corey. Amy reached out to me and after hopping on a call I knew we had to get her on the pod. Her experiences with grief, self-harm and self-acceptance are so powerful and she's chosen to share her story in a way the connects with so many people across so many mediums. I love what she's doing and I'm so happy to be able to share what she has to say with all of you. Kick back and relax because this week we're talking with Vietnam-born, mental health superstar in the making, Amy Corey.

75 Episodes! A really amazing milestone. Thank you so much for your love and support over the past four years, you beautiful wrecks. It hasn't been pretty, but it's been ours. I can't think of any better way to celebrate than with a conversation with one of my favourite podcasters, Brian Stever. Brian is a mental health advocate and a bonafide storyteller. As co-host of the Sickboy Podcast, he helps break down the stigma surrounding illness by fostering honest conversations like the one we had today. After learning about our shared appreciation for therapy while recording an episode of Sickboy (linked below), Brian and I decided to hop on the mics and chat about the place therapy hold in our lives. The conversation only blossomed from there. An open and authentic conversation between two men, what more could you want.

Not often a few boys from Charlotte County get to sit down and get into the nitty-gritty of mental health but luckily for you, today is one of those days. This week on the podcast I'm joined by fellow mental health advocate Matthew Dickson to talk about schizophrenia and the experiences he's had living with the disease for nearly 30 years. There are some laughs, some parts that are tough to hear, and definitely some times that will make you re-evaluate so much of what you think you know about schizophrenia. This episode is an ode to all those who feel alone or that there is no one around who understands what you're going through. A beautiful episode filled with beautiful stories. A very human episode that I'm hoping you'll get as much out of as I did. Kick back, relax, and let's learn something today.

What's going on guys and welcome back to Life's a Wreck! This week on the podcast we're sitting down with Taylor Lindsay-Noel to talk about self-identity, grieving the loss of yourself, and how mindset can help us achieve more than we ever thought possible. Taylor was paralyzed by a gymnastics accident at 14 and during incredibly formative years of her life had to readjust her sense of self. She's since blossomed into the amazing person she is today and has launched not only a successful podcast (Tea Time with Tay) but also a Luxury Tea Company (Cup of Té). Kick back, relax, and grab some tea because this is a good one.

Welcome back to Life's a Wreck (it's been a minute). I've been working on this podcast for the past five months and finally get to share it with all of you. It's been an experimental podcast for me as I look forward to what the future may hold for Life's a Wreck and let me promise you it has been a ton of fun piecing together. The entirety of this episode is inspired by the future. The future of me, of this pod and of the mental health care system in Canada. I was inspired to create this episode while listening to an episode of Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History. The episode was on experiments and specifically what magical experiments experts in various fields would do to vastly advance their understanding of their work. I wondered "huh what would this look like for mental health" and the concept for this pod and its new sound was born.
In this episode, you'll hear from:
The Scientific Director of the Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics (CAMH) Dr. Sean Hill, Canada's first EVER Federal Minister of Mental Health and Addiction The Honourable Dr. Carolyn Bennett, and the Executive Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association's Nova Scotia chapter Karn Nichols. Prominent voices in the mental health space, all coming together to discuss what the future of mental health looks like in Canada. Kick back and relax for a much-anticipated episode of Life's a Wreck.
Special thanks to:

For years of my life, I thought the standard was perfection. Everything I did, I felt I had to do perfectly. I craved to be the perfect son, boyfriend, student, and athlete, I wanted to be flawless and when a flaw presented itself I resented it. I thought perfection would lead to fulfillment. Sound familiar? Well, colour me fuc*ing pink when I one day woke up and came to the realization that PERFECTION ISN'T REAL and that the search for "perfect" had only ever left me in shambles. Perfectionism is one of the most misrepresented and misunderstood personality traits and goddamnit that stops today. Please help me welcome renowned psychologist and Perfectionism expert Dr. Simon Sherry for a truly perfect talk on perfectionism.
