She started lifting weights — without a clue what she was doing — but found it magical that she could literally shape her body using resistance training. She woke up 6 months later with serious delts and have never looked back. Always an athlete, in high school she did well in all things track and field, and then in college, she rowed crew for 4 years, in addition to teaching group fitness. Her personality has always been the same, even back then: jump in, and then figure it out on the fly, which is how she taught myself how to teach any fitness class you can think of. She always thought, why not try? She ended up earning her B.S. in Exercise Science from Wake Forest University and went on to get her M.S. in Human Nutrition at the University of Bridgeport. She trained for her very first figure competition when she was 24, just to see if she could do it. And after winning her first show, she was hooked. Addicted to the process, addicted to the high of seeing if she could be better than everyone else, and unfortunately, addicted to seeing my physique in “show shape.” She was signed on as a fitness model during that time and landed 4 national magazine covers. She competed in Fitness Modeling shows and more for 5 years. Until it seriously started to mess with her head. The diets and meal plans she used in the past simply stopped working. Her metabolism stopped being as responsive and she kept falling off the wagon, only to berate herself for poor discipline, laziness and weakness. She felt ashamed that she couldn’t stay on the programs she was giving her clients and she felt embarrassed and “fat” when she was in her off-season (even though according to normal standards, she was fit, lean and healthy). Over time, she got so fed up with the mind games and spinning her wheels around dieting, that she threw her hands up and decided she needed to find a new way, a healthier way, a forever way, even if that meant gaining weight. She couldn’t keep punishing herself with hours of cardio each day, nor could she keep jumping from failed plan to failed plan. She wanted to stop talking to myself so unkindly. She wanted to find a way to eat forever, she wanted to stop yo-yo’ing up and down 20 lbs each year. It was in 2011, 6 months after starting JillFit.com that she finally had the courage to try a new, more moderate way of doing things. She stopped the incessant food prep and obsession. She quit the relentless meal plan following. She started looking inward and trusting herself more. She started listening to my body more. She stopped following coaches and experts. And she finally had the courage to break the yo-yo cycle. The answer for her was in the gray. No more negative s...
